Figure Competition Prep - What You NEED to Know Before Stepping on Stage

A figure competition is a spin-off of female bodybuilding. It’s designed to allow women to compete in a physique show without having to build massive amounts of muscle or dip well below healthy body fat percentages. In a nutshell, figure competition prep is a combination of building muscle naturally and losing body fat to display a feminine physique on stage with a chance to win.

Now, if you want to enter and compete in a figure competition I’m going to tell you some little secrets and tips about how to prepare for one.

Those virtually flawless figure competitors that rule the stage actually put months and sometimes years of hard work to sculpt their bodies. Figure competition prep involves dieting and cardio for fat loss, weight training to build muscle, as well as learning how to pose to present you physique to the judges.

Many figure competitors embrace a low-carb diet to lose body fat quickly and easily. However, low-carbs can only work for so long so in the beginning phase of your figure competition diet it’s good to include a cheat day once a week. As your show gets close you will need to change that cheat day into a re-feed day.

Another part of the figure competition prep process is cardio. Cardio combined with the proper diet will ignite fat loss like crazy. However, don’t make the mistake many newbies make and jump into a boat-load of cardio right out the gate. That’s only a recipe for burnout and disaster. Successful figure competitors start cardio off on the light end and build it gradually over the course of the weeks of prepping.

Since you will be judged on muscle detail as well, you will need to get a good weight training program outlined. Your basic mountain climbers, jumping jacks, and kettle ball swings just aren’t going to build the muscle you need to have a figure competitor’s body. You need to get in the gym and push the iron.

For your figure competition prep, get a balanced training split, training each muscle group at least once a week, working out anywhere from 5-6 days a week. Be sure to not overtrain, as it’s easy to do before a contest. Make it a point to take at least one full day off a week to allow your body to rest and recover.
