Protein bars are popular and when it comes to your contest diet and serving size, portion control can play a crucial role in your rate of fat loss and even muscle development. Most people don’t even think about the amount of food or the nutrition facts when they sit down for a good meal. Those with a goal to lose fat, transform their body, or compete in a figure competition need to be aware of not only WHAT they are eating, but also HOW MUCH they are eating.

On many processed food items, including nutrition bars, the serving size is quite meager compared to what you may be unknowing eating.
I don’t mean to burst any bubbles, but protein bars are processed food items. If you can’t literally hunt it, pick it, gather it, fish it, or harvest it, it’s processed. But does that mean you have to omit them from your figure competition diet? No, not necessarily.
A protein bar is typically meant for an off-beat snack or an emergency meal. Most protein bars are just gussied-up candy bars. Honestly, take a look at the label, those nutrition facts. It’s doggone tasty and packed with 344 calories, 20 grams of protein, 12 grams of fat, 38 carbs and 24 sugars for one bar, or brownie. Sure, the label may appear to show something different, but if you notice, the serving size reads “Servings per container: 2.” Therefore, an actual serving of the muscle brownie would be only half of the brownie to give you what the label reads.
Are they bad for you and should you eliminate them? Not necessarily, but just keep in mind they are NOT 100% nutritious and just be aware of what’s in them and the amount you are eating. Compare the 20 grams of protein to the 12 grams of sugar in the bar. In doing so, well it’s easy to see it’s more of a candy bar and not a “protein bar.”
With protein bars you really need to choose them based on your current fitness goal. Some bars are high in calories all around for weight gain, other bars are high in fat, some are high in carbs, and others are high in sugar alcohol which can cause some gastrointestinal disruptions.

Sure, one of those Lenny and Larry’s Muscle Brownies would be okay if you were stranded on a deserted road in the snow or you can even have one on your chosen cheat day.
