What got you involved in figure competitions?
I bought an Oxygen Magazine before boarding a plane. When I was leafing through it I saw the competition results in the back. I loved the muscular yet still feminine physiques of the women/figure-competition-kimberly-front-pose-image
who graced the pages and said "I can do that".

How long have you been into fitness and working out?
I have been an "athlete" since grade school. I have always been a very active person as well, skiing, hiking, etc...I joined my first gym in 1983 when I was a senior in high school.

What is your competition weight and off-season weight?
Competition weight is 142 and off-season weight is about 150.

What motivates you to keep in shape?
My motto "Nothing tastes as good as fit feels"

How do you stick to your goals?
It's merely part of my daily routine. It's a lifestyle.

What is your nutrition like off-season?
I eat slightly more calories and complex carbs off-season, but still totally clean.

What is a basic cheat meal for you?
Pizza and a glass of red wine!

Are there any sacrifices? If so, how do you overcome them?
Some of the sacrifice are not being able to go out to dinner. I am single so it is always a challenge when dating and my date wants to take me to dinner. Thankfully I meet most of the men I
date at the gym so they have a bit of a clue about healthy eating. I simply explain that my diet is very strict and then recommend restaurants that I have gone to that I know can accommodate my food choices.

The way I look at it is....how I eat is part of who I am so if they can't put up with that we don't belong together anyway :-)

What do you find to be the hardest part about getting into contest shape and how do you overcome it?
I compete at all different times throughout the year so it always seems like there is a holiday dinner party, or summer picnic that I get invited to that is smack in the middle of my competition diet. I still go, I have just learned that I need to carry food in my purse. My friends all know I compete so it has kind of become a joke now.

What is your training split like?
I do cardio 6 days a week
5 day weight split (2 on 1 off 3 on, rest)

Do you track your personal best lifts and if so, what are they?
I don't really track them, I just know what they are.

Best leg press is 630 lbs for 5 reps, usual rep set 540
Best bench press is 185 lbs
Best lat row is 315 lbs

What do you do for cardio?
I do tons of HIIT training, track work, sprints, and bleachers.figure-competiton-coached-karen-image
